It used to be that people needed to live in the technology hubs of the world, like Silicon Valley or London, to accelerate their technology careers, but that’s changing quickly.

2016-12 Destination New Zealand

This week Amazon Web Services (AWS) held its annual conference Re.invent in Las Vegas. It’s the largest global conference to focus on all things cloud, and more than 30,000 people passed through the doors to attend keynotes, training workshops, technical sessions, and the partner expo.

This year, the Xero team worked together with Immigration New Zealand to showcase just why our country is the best place to work in the world. Nineteen New Zealand technology companies are involved in this project to bolster our country’s tech workforce.

In the past 10 years, over 28,000 people have immigrated to New Zealand, and not just for the fish and chips and pineapple lumps! If you haven’t visited New Zealand, no doubt you’ve seen the Lord of the Rings movies. Well, I can tell you this – yes, New Zealand really does look like that! We’re lucky to have pristine beaches, incredible vistas, thrilling outdoor adventure, and a rich culture and heritage, all available in our backyard.

And now, especially with the advent of the cloud, I’m happy to say that New Zealand plays host to fantastic career opportunities for technology experts.

With the work Xero is doing on artificial intelligence and machine learning (thanks, in large part, to our complete migration to the AWS platform), technologists don’t have to sacrifice a great lifestyle for career advancement in places like San Francisco or London.

In New Zealand, our technology industry is booming. We’re the third-highest exporting sector and we’re only getting bigger, which is why it’s so important that New Zealand companies work together to help grow the talent workforce that supports that economy. At Xero, we’re focused on creating and growing a talented and skilled workforce that will, in turn, help the nation compete for the massive growth around the world in data science, technology, and artificial intelligence.

To do that, we’ve begun attracting top talent from overseas to move to our headquarters in Wellington for roles like Software Developers, Web Developers, Senior Software Developers, Team Leaders, Agile Team Facilitators and people with experience in AI and AWS. We’re also looking for the next generation of local talent, encouraging stronger STEM skills with more than 40 graduates per year on our grad programme.

People are now realizing that they can have it all – a great technology career, work-life balance, and income – in the Land of the Long White Cloud, and these roles at Xero are filling fast! I hope all technologists considering their next move take a hard look at the benefits of moving to New Zealand and working on world-class projects that Xero’s got planned for the future.
